The ancient Indian game

Pachisi is one of India's oldest games. It is also known as Pagade, Chaupar, Chaupad, Dayakattam, Kori Khel. 

                           

It is believed that the Mughal Emperor Akbar played Pachisi and had women slaves from his harem play as coins/pieces.

Pachisi was played in many different ways across India. Some played it with cowrie shells while others played it with wooden or brass dice. There are many variations in the board itself. The rules also differed. It is believed that Pachisi was a poor man's game as it was played with cowrie shells as dice and the Royals played Chaupar - the game with wooden dice.

Pachisi is also believed to be the game of dice that gave rise to problems between the Kauravas and Pandavas that later ended in a war.

Chauka Bara

Chauka Bara is a very old game that was played across India with different names. Chauka and Bara denotes the two different throws of the cowrie shells. The name origins from the Mysore region of Karnataka, India. Other popular names are Kavidikali and Astha chamma.

Da Game

A month back Khadija had written to me asking if I could design 'Da' for her. I wasn't sure at first if she spelt the game right because I had never played or even heard of it! She told me that Da was a game her grandmother used to play and so did she when she was a kid but it isn't available anywhere now. Originally the game was played on cloth just like most games that were originated in India but since it is not made anymore she wanted one done for her. The only thing she told me was to make the background interesting. 

She helped me with the basic structure of the game and the rest was done in true Pachisi style. I chose a fabric with script design on it and used embroidery and applique techniques. 

About the game: There are two teams and each team has 1 Queen and 9 Knights. The aim of the game is that each team should try and get to the other side of the board to win.
